It’s Summertime! 5 Healthy Meals To Enjoy In The Sunshine

It’s summertime in New York City! Bring on the free outdoor concerts, weekly museum events, and plethora of farmers markets. And bring on the food! Summer is a great time to really enjoy nutritious eating, because the abundance of produce actually makes eating delicious, healthy meals easy! Here are Flygyal’s top picks for good-for-you summer eats.

1.)   Watermelon

It’s a classic summer staple, full of Vitamins C and A, and because half of this fruit is made up of water (hence the name), it delivers a great nutritional-bang for a low-calorie-buck. Plus all that H2O makes this a refreshing choice come hot summer days.

2.)   Hearty Salads

Now is a great time to load up on amazing veggies like cucumber, tomatoes, zucchini, beets, greens, and peapods- making your salads far more interesting (and much better for you) than your classic store bought Caesar salad. And for those of you that are still fans of the traditional Caesar, give your lunch a health upgrade by subbing iceberg lettuce for kale.

3.)   Grilled Veggies

Firing up the grill is a sure sign that summer is here to stay, and what better way to ring it in than with some delicious grilled veggies? You can try grilling just about anything, but some great options include onions, bell peppers, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, and asparagus. Bonus: the best thing about a diet packed with veggies is that portion control can pretty much go out the window—it’s hard to damage your waistline with these super nutritional foods! If you cook regularly, keep some of these already sliced and diced in your fridge; that way when you’re hungry you can start chowing down in minutes!

4.)   Refreshing Low Calorie Drinks

It can be tempting once temperatures hit 100+ to run straight for an ice cold soda, but if Mayor Bloomberg has taught us anything, it’s that these beverages do way more harm than good. If you’re craving something with fizz, try this tasty recipe from WebMD: mix 12 oz. of lemon seltzer water with ¼ cup of pomegranate juice and the juice from one freshly squeezed lemon. Serve over ice for a tasty and refreshing summer beverage!

5.)   Fruity Desserts

Fruits are a great way to naturally satisfy a sweet tooth, and a quick toss on the grill, a few berries, or a dip into some dark chocolate can help these summer treats go a long way. Peaches, pineapples, and strawberries are some all-stars of this category— get creative and enjoy!
