What are the hottest dance fashion trends to hit the studio and stage this season? No, harem pants didn’t make the list and neither did those comfy go-to black leggings. So tuck those away in the deepest, darkest corner of your closet and never wear them unless it is a dire laundry day situation!
This season is all about the 90’s! I know, I know. You’re probably wondering, “it’s only 2013, why are 90s fashion trends coming back so soon?” Ummmm, because that decade was awesome! You had bold print sweaters, over the top accessories, big jackets, and baggy jeans. What dancer doesn’t want to re-experience this era of culture?? So get some 90s swag in your life and peep how to update these timeless looks for the present.
Like Kevin Hart says, “Say it with your chest!” This season opt for sweatshirts with big graphics, bold lettering, and funky colors. Remember those oversized knit Coogi sweaters the fly guys in your school used to wear? Pair that with a distressed short, wedge sneakers, and your ray-bans, and you will be dubbed the queen of swag for the year!
The black legging crew is not welcome this semester! Unless it’s just “one of those days,” or it’s laundry day, you should really make an effort to stay away from plain black leggings. There are so many textile and print options out there. Experiment with color, cuts, and fabrics. If you absolutely need black leggings, try ones with a lace inset on the side seam, or leggings that have a sexy mesh peek-a-boo effect. The same goes for harem pants. Choreographers hate them, and they do nothing for your lines.
Instead, opt for baggy cargo and chino pants in camo or khaki material. They look uber cute dressed up with a pump, and you can look swag-tastic by sagging them slightly to let your boy shorts peek out the top. Throw on a pair of Tim’s and a cropped tank and you’re dolled for the gods!! Other pant choices to consider this season are overalls!! Not for Old McDonald anymore. How to wear: Let one side hang off the shoulder, wear a cute cropped tee, and accessorize with your favorite snap-back, flannel shirt around the waist, and large geometric earrings.
Button up blouses are a great way to add some unique flavor to your dance look. When shopping, opt for blouses with embellished collars and graphic prints with a vintage Versace vibe (like chains, floral patterns, greek lines). We also like sleeveless and cropped button-up options, and you definitely want to go for large print flannels, thick stripes, and shirts made of sheer and denim options.
This season, let your accessories be the inspiration for your outfit, not the other way around. We love anything to do with gold chains, lion heads, ear-cuffs of all sizes and shapes, comic-inspired colors and pieces, antique silver, winged studs, midi rings, beanies, and Wayfarer’s. Layered necklaces are a great way to add style points to your outfit, and don’t be afraid to go big with your bracelets! Layer up and have fun!
