Barbie-Inspired Valentine’s Day Look

Barbie Fashion

By Jadée Nikita

Spice things up this Valentine’s Day with a cute outfit inspired by two mega pop culture icons – classic Barbie and the neoteric 50 Shades of Grey.  Both phenomenons serve as the perfect template for this season’s “it” colors.  Barbie pink looks great on all skin tones and can appear sophisticated when dressed up with the appropriate accessories.  You can be daring and shop for a sculpted electric pink cocktail dress, or be discreet and incorporate the pink into smaller statement pieces like clutches and pencil skirts.  Barbie inspired Jeffrey Campbell for Moschino this season, so let her be your muse, too 🙂

To top off the look, pair your cocktail dress with a subdued heather grey cape with fur lining around the collar and hem.  This screams softened elegance!  For us Fly Gyal’s who like to accessorize, keep your necklace, bracelets, and and rings minimal.  I prefer mixing thin pieces of gold and black jewelry to break up the vibrancy of the pink, then adding a big, fancy cocktail ring to set it off.  Talk about eat your heart out!  He will be swooning before you even say, “hello.”

Happy Valentine’s Day Fly Gyal’s!

Trend of the Week: Camo Dance Fashion

By Jadée Nikita

Inspired by our valiant men and women of the armed forces, camo, and it’s respective color palettes are always a great addition for your A/W wardrobe.  Play around and shop for jackets that feature a military fatigue print (aka BDUs), or go for one that is solid camo-green.  To take your look from the front lines to the street, add a funky accent color like red or orange, or add patches and studs to your parka.   Check out our other favorite camo-inspired looks below:

Super Fly Buys for Under $80!

Before leaving the house, a woman should take a look in the mirror and remove one accessory.

– Coco Chanel

By Jadée Nikita

Keep it simple and sexy this A/W season and diversify your wardrobe with the basics by mixing black with white.  To create a clean, chic look, I recommend going with a less is more approach.  Like Coco said, “Before leaving the house, a woman should take a look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”  Therefore if you want to spice it up a bit, use jewel tones like plums, emeralds and navy blues in your makeup or accessories.  I love a nice cranberry lip.

Chunky platforms are easier to walk in than thin stilettos, and white, diamond-quilted, ankle lug-boots are a great statement piece for any shirt dress.  I love pairing my short, loose dresses with thigh-high socks and a complementing snapback.  This look is flawless, easy, and super comfy.  The best thing of all – you can get each item for under $80!   #TooFly

Last-Minute Halloween Outfit – Emo Teenager

By Jadée Nikita

Happy Halloween, Fly Gyals!  Are you ready for that one time of the year where you can dress up as someone else besides yourself?  No?  Well, don’t worry.  You can still have fun and look like you’re a part of the party as well.  If you didn’t have time to go to the costume store this year, that’s ok!  Halloween can still be saved with your savvy wit and crafty creativity.  If you can’t sew your own costume, try mixing and matching items you already have in your closet.  You’ll be surprised what you can put together under dire circumstances.

A fun, and easy costume to pull off on a budget is the Emo-Teenager.  I love these skeleton garter leggings paired with a festive graphic tee.  To complete the look, accessorize with a bold navy blue lip, silver rings, skull necklaces, and a large brim hat.  Don’t forget your candy pail!  Try mixing it up by shopping for a holiday bag in the shape of a pumpkin!  It doesn’t have to be orange, just fly 😉

Trend of the Week: Hollywood Glam Bridesmaids

By Jadée Nikita

If you were the Maid of Honor and the bride asked you to help her style the bridesmaids look for her big day, what would you suggest? – Weddington Way

Weddings are special, so why not go all out for that amazing day?  Share the experience with your gyal pals, and let them feel special as well by dolling them up in an old hollywood glam look!

The color

Fly Gyals are bold, so I took a non-traditional route and chose a fabulous ombre cranberry red dress for my bridesmaids.  In most cultures, red is a symbol of good luck and prosperity.  This long and flowy, yet fitted bodice dress will look great on most body shapes.

The bag:  Should be fun, complementing, and versatile.  I love clutches with mini rosettes on them because when your bridesmaids aren’t carrying their bouquet, it will still look like they are holding flowers.  How fly is that?!

The shoes:  Since the dress is long, it will cover up most of the shoe.  Therefore, opt for comfort and treat your gyals to a mani-pedi if wearing sandals 😉

Jewelry:  Since we are going for an old holywood glam look, go for pieces that are simply-opulent.  Statement necklaces in crystal and diamonds look great with cropped-top dresses, and chandelier and drop earrings with structured shapes work well with halter dresses.  Pretty much, anything that sparkles is golden!

Makeup:  Go non-traditional and keep the glam going with a simple cat-eye and dark-berry lip.  Not only will your gyals look mysteriously gorgeous, they will have a sweet toughness to them as well.

Trend of the Week: New Jack City

By Jadée Nikita

Classic 90s hip hop and urban-drama films like New Jack City, Poetic Justice, and Set it Off are perfect inspirations for fall dancewear trends.  Cropped hoodies, Tim’s, and gold-chain-everythang are great starter pieces to achieve this look.  To look like you’re partying in 2014, try:

  • applying a dark lipstick, like black, to your pout. It’s a bold statement, and a hue you have to wear with confidence.
  • rocking a simple body chain or a single chain necklace instead of multiple chains.
  • carrying your dance gear in a sturdy leather traveler bag.  It doubles perfectly as a dance bag and weekender vacation luggage.
  • wearing midi-rings.  They are way too cute to pass on.

Trend of the Week: Lax Luxe

By Jadée Nikita

Go on and brush your shoulders off Fly Gyal, because when it comes to mixing fashion with comfort, no one does it better than a dancer.  Our sweats and fancy leotards are the inspiration for a lot of designs in fashion right now.  If you’ve shopped in any retail store recently, you’ll know what I mean.  The racks are stocked to the brim with printed leggings, crop tops, bodysuits and sweat pants for fall.  With dancewear taking hold in the mass market, now is the time to turn your average basics into super luxe classics.  Here’s 4 easy ways to get the job done:

1.  Anything diamond-quilted should be your new best friend!  It screams high-end, chic, and sophisticated.

2.  Joggers + Heels = Dance Party!  Got a long day but don’t have the time to go home and change for the even longer night that’s ahead?  That’s ok.  Just throw on a pair of cute jogging pants and keep a pair of heels in your bag for later.

3.  Fringe is like a good diamond quilt-It’s a gyal’s best friend this season.  Best used as a statement piece, I recommend shopping for fringe cross-body bags and clutches.  If you’re feeling really adventurous, look for purses with beaded or crystal fringe.

4.  Leather is luxe.  Not only is leather super comfy and soft to the touch, but the material is also perfect for blocking out cold weather.  The range in looks you can achieve with leather are out of this world as well!  Leather sleeves can add a dash of class to a simple sweater , or you can go punk by shopping for moto jackets, vests, and skirts.  My favorite wardrobe must-have for fall is perforated leather.  Eeek!  I die!

The True Blue

navy blue fall fashion

By Jadée Nikita

Navy blues are perfect for this season because it’s fun, versatile and really stands out when paired with a bright colors like canary yellow, rose red, or tangerine.  If your wardrobe consists of mainly black clothes, darker blues are a great way to change up your color palette without straying too far away from your comfort zone.  Navy is also a good choice for the office.  Wearing it says you’re professional and approachable.

Trend of the Week: The Gray Scale

gray mood board

By Jadée Nikita

Making yet another stunning impression on the runway this A/W14 season is the color gray.  50 shades of gray played a strong role in setting the foundation for many designer’s collections this year.  Ranging from charcoal and smoky grays, to light misty grays, the color isn’t meant to be worn as an accent piece.  Instead, make the look modern and let it serve as a base for textured patterns and transparent fabrics.  If you’re craving more excitement in your wardrobe, be bold and shop for metallic grays in nickel and liquid mercury.  High on my fall must-have list is a chic, pebbled leather tote bag in slate gray.
