Who run the world? Gyals!!  That’s right! And this weekend there will be no mistaking that fact.  Tomorrow kicks off the annual Ladies of Hip Hop Festival in NYC where the industry’s leading female choreographers will host a 3-day workshop for dancers of all ages and genders.  All styles of dance will be covered from commercial dance with Rhapsody James to Flexin with Deidre.  To wrap the event up there will be a final showcase on the last day of classes. Here you can battle for cash money, compete with your crew, and see what the gyals have worked on all weekend.  If you are a professional dancer and you are in the Tri-State area this weekend, you DEFINITELY do not want to miss out!  #JustSayin

How to Register

Check out the entire weekend schedule here!  Although it is too late to register online for classes you can still register at the door by paying $25/class (space permitting, so make sure you get there early to to register!).   If you wish to participate in battle competitions, you can register online until Saturday, July 13th.

P.S. If you end up going to the dance party, share your experience with us and we will publish your comments on the site!

Marleen Melendez was spotted sporting her pastels to perfection in Jared Jenkins rehearsal this week. From décolleté to pinky toe, Marleen looks effortlessly chic in a minty green knit sweater that hangs off the shoulder, paired with a strong black legging, and finished with her matching mint green Chuck Taylor’s.  Marleen’s accessories grabbed our attention from the start and are great conversation starters.  Check out her faithful gold cross-hoop earrings, sparkling gold and neautral mix stiletto nails, and black enameled, 2-finger mustache ring. Excuse me Marleen, we mustache you a question! Why you so fly, gyal?!

Fly Gyal Of The Week: Katie M.F. Anderson

Katie AndersonThis week’s Fly Gyal was spotted in Washington, D.C at Joy of Motion Atlas Dance Studio auditioning for Grammy-Winning artist, Mya. Baywatch beware! This blonde hottie wore a showstopping outfit that had all eyes on her (in a good way of course). Katie M.F Anderson rocked her trendy black and white vertical stripe hot pants over fishnets and donned a cute front-zipper lifeguard-inspired crop top with suspenders to top it off.  Katie’s bubbly personality and audition-ready persona make her our Fly Gyal of the Week!

Fly Gyal of the Week: Brittany Waldenmaier

BW3Brittany Waldenmaier is a dancinista both in the class room and out.  She was spotted looking Fly Gyal stylish at the Creating Opportunities Grad Dinner in NYC.  She immediately grabbed our attention with her navy blue crop top with a sweetheart neckline and front zipper, paired with her black and gold aztec-patterned jogger pants with braided black trim. We love how she accessorized her ensemble with old gold arrow point earrings and a chunky cuff. Her blue suede double strap platform pumps top off the look and her black cardigan brings the outfit from day to night flawlessly.  All of her pieces were past Trends of the Week!  Brittany has been doing her homework and keeping up with the latest Fly Gyal trends which makes her an obvious choice for today’s Fly Gyal of the Week.

Aurelia Michael was spotted in the bustling hallways of Broadway Dance Center before Jared Jenkins class this week.  She grabbed our attention immediately with her lovely gold rope accessories, vintage-style wardrobe, and her natural makeup.  Can we say fly from head to toe!?  We love how she jazzed up her black and white ensemble with a braided statement necklace of teal, purple, pink, and yellow gold.  Her gold spiral earrings follow the spherical theme found throughout her dance garb, and her diamond embezzled gold watch is the perfect touch to take her outfit from the studio to the subway.  Aurelia is street-chic with her pocketed loose-fit pants in black and white which pairs nicely with her vintage adidas with red trim and parti-colored laces.  With flawless hair, a fresh mani, and blushing makeup, this fly gyal is giving us life!

Fly Gyal of the Week: Tina Jackson

Tina Jackson never ceases to grab our attention with her superbly styled ensembles. Thankfully, she was able to take a moment to step out of her Front Desk Manager role at Broadway Dance Center for a mini photoshoot right in the halls of BDC. She caught our eye with her Danice bright neon plunge v-neck – what a lifter-upper during this dreary, rainy weather – clean hair, and bright red lips. THEN we noticed her Uniqlo polka dot pants, killer Jessica Simpson heels, Strawberry black leather jacket, and BDC Retail Store “KEEP CALM AND DANCE ON” pin. (We’re feeling seriously “pin”-spired… Fly Gyal pins, anyone?) And check out her snazzy nail art detail! Just more proof that Tina’s got every detail nailed down. Fly Gyal of the Week: Ichihara Yukie

Ichihara Yukie is a stand out dancinista for sure!! Spotted taking Jared Jenkins hip-hop class at BDC, we admire her rebellious, risk-taking attitude and moves like Jagger.  Ichihara’s white and black graphic tee reminds us of a 1920’s flapper girl meets S&M.  We adored how she paired it with black pocketed harem pants, blue and white low-top Nike’s and her Mitchell and Ness Brooklyn Nets limited edition basketball cap.  Can we say FLY!?  Coupled with the demeanor of a confident bad Gyal and a cute asymmetrical bob haircut, this Gyal looks flawless from head to toe!  Take notes: risks get you noticed! Like Laurel Thatcher Ulrich explains, “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”

Fly Gyal of the Week: Sherrell Whitmire

By Samantha Yu

Introducing Sherrell Whitmire, an Ohio native we spotted in Neil Schwartz’s Intermediate-Advanced Hip-Hop class atBroadway Dance Center. She’s currently a participant in BDC’s Professional Semester Program and from what we can see, we’d bet she’s kicking butt!

Sherrell is on point with her sheer sleeveless animal print top. The print is eye-catching, the lack of sleeves allows for ventilation (she came prepared to sweat look cute look cute while sweating!), and the sheer material is sassy, showing just a hint of her undergarment. Shout out to last week’s Fly Gyal Dance Fashion Trend of the Week!

And as if that didn’t make her fly enough already, Sherrell also proved she knows what’s going on with her sheer side-panel leggings. She told us that she bought the leggings a while back in Ohio but never wore them until today! We think she should be sporting them all day err day!

Sherrell’s combat boots and voluminous hair are the perfect finishing touches to a stellar outfit. Be sure to follow her oninstagram to see what’s inspiring her dance fashion style!
