Vaseline Can Do This Too!

By Cody Frank

One of the least expensive beauty remedies out there, this little bottle packs all the punches!  For example:

  • To help earring insertion: rub a little Vaseline on your ear lobes before inserting those earrings if it’s been a minute.
  • Chapped/Dry nose: adds back moisture.
  • Tame eyebrows: will help to hold eyebrow hairs in position
  • Soothe dry cuticles: it works just as well as those expensive cuticle creams
  • Open a stubborn nail polish: before you unscrew, add a bit
  • Removing fake eyelashes: this is a lifesaver…rub a tiny bit on your lash line with a cotton ball…wait a few minutes & gently peel away
  • Removing stubborn water-proof eyeliner, mascara, or eyeshadow.
  • Highlight your cheekbones: adds a dewy finish.
  • Protect your skin when you dye your hair: dab a layer of Vaseline on your hair line. It prevents your skin from getting dyed the same color as your hair.
  • Prevent chafing: wherever you’re chafing, add a little of this substance for instant relief

Yoga for Dancers

Photo via Blog Plos Org

By Cody Frank

Yoga is a workout where you can calm the mind and sculpt the body at the same time. Generally, it is a excellent addition to any work out. Are you unsure about what to do at a yoga class? Dancers participating in yoga for the first time? Fear not. You have successfully lived the tale after your first dance class and audition. You can do this as well.

  • Go in with an open mind, who knows what results could happen for you? Physically or mentally.
  • First class, locate yourself in the back of the room. You will be able to follow people in the front of the room and can look to the side. In addition, you don’t have to worry about looking foolish even though that’s not an issue. You are here for yourself, not for comparison.
  • Remember, you can take a break. This isn’t a test or a competition. Yoga is rejuvenating for your body. If you feel like resting, take a break. This is not a class you have to keep on pushing through.
  • Experiment with different types of yoga classes to find the best style and teacher for you. For the daredevils there are classes in acroyoga and aerial yoga. Personally, I am a Hatha fan because it’s more about relaxing and breathing. Power yoga is a favorite among money that combines power poses and breathing in a structure. Another popular form is Bikram which is a sequence of poses in a hot room. The list goes on. 2015 Flygyal, go out there and try something new.

Buffer Your Face Against Pollution!

By Cody Frank

You have heard that pollution is horrible for your lungs and breathing. Have you ever considered that it also damages your skin? Especially your facial skin which is exposed to the outdoors the majority of the time. Unless you  have a costume on that requires total head coverage… Back to the point, look at these tips below to keep looking flawless.

1.Clean it off. Washing your face twice a day helps to remove the impurities it acquires throughout the day and night. Once in the morning wash with a gentle cleanser. Use a stronger cleanser only if you’re prescribed one from your doctor. You do not want to irritate your skin. At night gently exfoliate, wash off the pollutants your face has gathered and apply a toner.

2. Neutralize it. After cleansing, apply a serum with antioxidants twice a day. These will help to protect your skin and diminish the free radicals on your face from pollution.

3. Create a barrier. Use SPF daily to protect your skin and the ozone layer of the earth!

Sore Throat Treatments On A Budget

By Cody Frank

It’s dry outside and quite chilly. There’s merry and holly cheer in the air. The last thing you want is to have a sore throat. Whether you wake up with pain or you find it’s hard to find your voice throughout the day; a remedy is just around the corner. If you can’t spend those extra bucks on that spray or lozenge check out these tips below. Many more are located on the links below as well. Find what suits you best.

  • Chicken soup – It’s not only meant for when you are sick. You can indulge in it when your throat hurts as well.
  • Gargle with warm salt water – Gargling with salt decreases your swelling
  • Apple Cider Vinegar Drink – 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar, 1 tablespoon of honey, & 1 cup of very warm water. The Vinegar has a high acidic level and can help destroy bacteria in your throat.
  • Suck on garlic – Contains allicin; which can fight germs causing pain/irritation and fight off bacteria. My personal note is to imagine it as a lollipop and don’t plan on leaving the house after this.
  • Cayenne kick – 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1 cup of bowling water, 1 teaspoon of honey. This spice temporarily alleviates pain

DIY Sugar Scrub That Will Make Your Wallets & Skin Happy!

Get Rid of Dandruff the Natural Way!

By Cody Frank

White flakes on your shoulders and falling from your head? The only white specks that you want to see are snowflakes! Winter is here and your scalp may be showing the signs. No one wants to be constantly scratching their head or worried about their scalp. I have found that these treatments at home are better for your wallet, your body, and the environment.

Aloe vera. Massage aloe vera onto your scalp and wait 20 minutes. Then go in the shower and rinse off with shampoo. It doesn’t only help sunburned skin, it helps any dry skin! Tip, you can also try this with lemon juice if summer used up your supply of aloe vera.

Coconut oil & almond oil or olive oil. Warm up some oil on the stove or in the microwave. Massage into your scalp and wrap a towel around your head. Sleep a night like this and in the morning rinse out your hair. Moisturize those dead skin cells!

Apple cider vinegar. Combine two cups of water and two cups of apple cider vinegar. Shampoo your hair as normally then rinse it out with this mixture. There are various ways to use the vinegar.  You can read more about those uses here!

There are various ways to fight dandruff without purchasing dandruff shampoo or loading your scalp with chemicals. Try out one and if it does not work move on to the next one. Make sure to give treatments enough time to work, one time isn’t enough. You’ll be flake free in no time.

DIY Facial Toner Under $5!!

By Cody Frank

acne-home-treatment-cleaning-face

Photo via smart girls tips

We have come to believe that the more chemicals we put on our face, the more clear it will become. Or the more expensive the cleaner, toner, moisturizer, the better skin we will have. This is not always the case. A natural and inexpensive way to cleanse your face is to use coconut oil as a cleanser and an apple cider vinegar toner. Try it out for yourself before you make that face again.

Apple cider vinegar is a natural affordable antiseptic and antibacterial. When the liquid contains raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar it balances the natural pH of the skin, exfoliates dead skin cells, clears away excess oils/make up, and can improve acne, sun, and age spots.

Ingredients:

  • Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
  • Distilled water
  • Optional: essential oils or herbal tea

Directions:

  • For sensitive skin: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 4 parts water
  • For normal skin: Combine 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water
  • For oily skin: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water

You can store the toner in a spray bottle or glass container and apply with a cotton square to your face after cleansing. Do not rinse it off after application.

First try the sensitive skin ratio to see how your skin reacts. Experiment to see what ratio fits best for your particular skin type. After a while, if you feel the solution is weak, you can increase the ratio of apple cider vinegar to water gradually. Do not increase more than a 1:1 ratio of water to apple cider vinegar.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

By Cody Frank

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Flygyal received an email requesting us to write an article on Lung Cancer Awareness. Specifically on Mesothelioma. Have you heard of Mesothelioma? I did not before reading about it. Since it is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Flygyal has decided to bring you more information about this disease.

It is a disease that is hard to identify and not many people know about. A cancer that affects the thin membrane (mesothelium) that surrounds your body’s internal organs and cavities. Generally, the cause of this disease is from the exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a natural mineral that was known for it’s versatility. A mineral that has heat resistance, insulating properties, and tensile strength. It was used for home/commercial construction, fire-proof vests, in cement, and put in fabric as well. Asbestos that are inhaled can become stuck in the lining of the lungs which causes inflammation of the pleura (the space between the two lungs) and scar tissue formation.

                                                                                                                                     asbestos3photo via wku.edu

The main cause of this disease is exposure to asbestos whether inhaled first hand or second hand exposure. Unfortunately, asbestos are STILL NOT banned in the United States. Yet, it’s proven to be a hazard to all. Other contributions to this disease is smoking, radiation exposure, and carbon nanotubes. To avoid asbestos in your community, work place, and life: look at this link to discover exactly where they are.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that can be prevented. Start by educating yourself about asbestos and doing what you can do to bring awareness for yourself.

Thank you to Heather Von. St. James; this post wouldn’t have happened without her reach out.

S’mores Rice Krispies

smore

Ingredients:
3 Tablespoons butter
10oz mini marshmallows
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
3-1/2oz marshmallow fluff
6 sheets graham crackers (12 halves), divided
1/2 teaspoon vegetable or canola oil

Directions:

  1. First, spray an 8×8 baking dish with non stick spray. Put 1 cup of chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl & microwave in 20 seconds increments, until melted and smooth. Stir the chocolate between every 20 seconds. Place marshmallow fluff in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Over medium heat, melt the butter in a large pot. Add marshmallows & stir until smooth. Add the Rice Krispies and stir until it’s combined well. Quickly, scoop half of the mixture into the baking dish and press into an even layer (Recommended to spray the bottom of glass with nonstick spray to help press.) Then pour the melted chocolate over the rice krispie treats layer. Smooth with a spatula. Add 9 of the graham cracker halves on top. For 20 seconds, microwave marshmallow fluff. Then spread on top of graham crackers.
  3. Spoon remaining rice krispie treats on top of marshmallow fluff layer & press lightly to smooth. Melt the remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips with vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 20 second increments. Between increments stir, until melted & smooth. Drizzle the chocolate on top of the rice krispie treats and crumble 3 remaining graham crackers halves to sprinkle on top.
  4. Allow rice krispie treats to set for 30 minutes before slicing into 16 squares with a sharp knife and serving.

Pumpkin Pie Rice Krispie Treats

pumpkin

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup canned pumpkin puree* (or fresh..blot excess moisture from puree)
  • 1 (10 ounce) bag mini marshmallows
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 2 oz white chocolate candy melts (Or Ghirardelli White Chocolate Baking Bar)

Directions:

1. Spray a 9×13 baking pan with non-stick spray. If you want thicker treats you can use a 11.7 pan.
